How to Reset the Tire Pressure Light

Mechanic with Tires

Your modern vehicle has a TPMS, or tire pressure monitoring system, that tells you if the inflation on one or more of your tires is too low. A flashing tire pressure light on your dashboard indicates the TPMS detects low pressure, and the warning light should turn off after you inflate the tires properly.

If your tire pressure light remains on after you’ve inflated your tires, you may have to reset the tire pressure light. Your tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is critical to the safety of your vehicle, and it has to work properly. If you’re running into problems with your TPMS light on and staying on, take these steps to try to remedy the situation. Or, bring your vehicle to the service center at Campus Ford near Staunton. We’ll also showcase below how to reset your tire pressure light. We’ll be happy to help you in any way we can!

How to Reset Tire Pressure Light

After you properly inflate your tires, the flashing tire pressure light should go off on its own. If it remains on, there are a few actions you can take in how to reset your tire pressure light.

Look over these steps:

  • Drive at or above 50 mph for 10 minutes. This can cause your sensor to reset the next time you turn on the car.
  • With the vehicle off, turn the key to the “On” position or push the button to the accessory position, but don’t start the car. Hold the TPMS reset button until the tire pressure light blinks three times. Then release the button. Start the car. Wait 20 minutes for the sensor to reset itself. The tire pressure monitor reset button is usually located beneath the steering wheel. If you can’t find it, check the user’s manual or driver information center through the touchscreen.
  • Inflate all tires to 3 PSI over their recommended amount, then deflate them completely. Be sure to include the spare tire, as it may have a sensor as well. Once they’re all deflated, reinflate them to the recommended tire pressure.
  • With the vehicle off, disconnect the positive battery cable with a wrench. Turn the car on and honk the horn for about three seconds. This will discharge any power still stored in the battery. Then reconnect the battery. Disconnecting the battery means you may have to reset the time on your clock as well.

What Does a Flashing Tire Pressure Light Mean?

Tire pressure sensors often use a battery separate from the main battery. A flashing tire pressure light may indicate the battery needs to be replaced. There may also be a problem with one of the sensors. You might also be wondering how to reset the tire pressure light as well. Either way, schedule service at Campus Ford near Charlottesville. We can diagnose the problem and get you back on the road safely and with your TPMS in working order on your new or used vehicle.
